Report this message By Paul McBride on 5th Dec 2009Sam and I were on aircrew course together in 1984. We had to conduct a survival course in the New Forest. We stayed there for ten days without food during December. We were told that rabbits and squirrels were creatures of habit. If they run along a path once, they will do it again. Sam spotted a squirrel with a load of nuts on the ground and chased it around the forest! Finally it dropped all its nuts and legged it up a tree. It was like fort knox around that tree afterwards and we had nuts for tea-roasted over an open fire, they were great. A weasley officer in our small group wanted to have one, which he didn't deserve, but we grudgingly gave him the last one. He put it on a stick and placed it over the fire. The nut exploded!! It was one of the biggest laughs I have ever had. I'll miss you Sam.

For those of you who knew and loved Sam, you might like to look at the following pilot's website as there are some lovely messages and also photos taken during his last happy days on his favourite island Gili Trawangan. He loved life out there during his time off and we will miss his wonderful humour and gorgeous smile.
We are still awaiting correct paperwork from Indonesia and cannot go ahead with laying Sam to rest. The funeral directors will have all the up to date details and we hope to have a very good send-off as soon as permission is granted. Trust Sam to get into some sort of mix-up right to the end and keep us all on tenderhooks! He would call it just a "jolly jape" and we have to smile.
Sally, Toby and Alastair Hoy

Report this message By andy robert watters on 7th Nov 2009Sam, I can't believe that you're no longer with us. I have so many great memories from endless summers in Crieff - up The Knock, playing in and around the golf course, long cycle runs round Monzie, sharing a few drinks at The Murray Park with you and Colin Buick followed by late nights playing 'Risk.' I was quite envious of your life of travel in the navy - laterally you were based down south and used to drive up to Crieff in your jeep - it all seemed so glamourous compared to my life as a student.
Then you became a surfing dude down in Newquay and more news followed that you'd moved to the US and were working hard and saving money.
Next I heard you were a fully qualified helicopter pilot. I couldn't believe that you'd held onto that dream from childhood and turned it into reality! And all that money you'd saved you'd used to pay for helicopter lessons. If I'd been wearing a hat I would've tipped it in your direction.
From where I'm sitting, you acheived so much in such a relatively short life.
I've been thinking about you a lot over the last few weeks. I am not a religious person but I will say a prayer for you and hope that you are in a better place.
Your good friend
Andy Watters
Report this message By Cameron McMurchie on 29th Oct 2009When we were at school together Herr Schmitt asked Sam what he wanted to do when he left school and Sam replied, "A helicopter pilot".
Schmitt just laughed at Sam and told him not to be so stupid.
I loved the day when Sam sent me a photo of him standing beside his helo, it made me think back to that day, Good on you Sam
Will miss you fella
