Report this message By Anthony Conroy on 21st Jan 2010I was probably around 4 when i visited Aunt Alison during this time Hugh was boarding at Clifton College and i was allowed to sleep in (the inner sanctum) "Hugh's room" , this was no ordinary bedroom it was surrounded by the most amazing collection of Puppets which hung round the entire room! (i had no idea that's what they were at the time), but i remember being totally fascinated by their faces and colours ,now i look back they were pretty spooky , but at the time i don't remember being scared! Hugh seemed to have all the Toys that every boy would have loved . I particularly liked the tiny metal die cast farm animals which i would spread out all over the bedroom carpet quite happily playing with them for hours at a time.
During the early 50's because of the distance between Bristol & Solihull people seldom travelled like they do these days , but my next memory of Hugh was a few years later at our Grand Parents house in Pilning , I had insisted on taking this whopping big clockwork Tank on the bus the day my Mother took me there, sadly there was a mechanical problem with it , and Hugh came forward offering to have a look at it , i have to say that at first i was'nt sure about handing my prized Toy over , but he reassured me it would be ok! soon the screw driver came out and Hugh had the Tank in a thousand bits , and sometime later handed it back to me in perfect working order! I was over the moon !as you could imagine , I am thinking he must have been about 18 at that time.
I will always remember Hugh as a very Friendly Cousin
who had a passion for knowledge and embraced modern technology with huge enthusiasm even much later in life which is so rare these days, this has inspired me to follow in his footsteps , i hope that this will give you a short glimpse into the life & times of Hugh Watkins
Thank you Hugh.

My heartfelt sympathies to Hugh's family and friends. He was a true gentleman: generous with both his knowledge and his time. I feel honoured to have "met" him, even though it was only online. I am sure he is up in heaven now, delighted to be finally getting all the answers to his unanswered questions in his family tree. Rest in peace Hugh. You will be greatly missed.Lyn Wilkinson in NSW, Australia
Report this message By Mary Crane on 12th Jan 2010Genealogists are the most generous of people and Hugh was one of the most generous with his knowledge and time. He gave me so much information on our shared Lapham family history and was just an amazing person.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I have enjoyed Hugh's blog. A fellow genablogger, his posts gave me some leads on my own English roots, especially those from Wordsley outside Birmingham. My thoughts are with you.Linda Hughes Hiser, North Olmsted, Ohio
