For My Dad

When I was born you named me

Your princess, Margaret Rose.

I always felt so favoured

Those many years ago.

When you sang your songs of roses

And Scarlet Ribbons for my hair,

Your smile made me feel special

On my side, always there.

You worked so hard and struggled

To do the best you could.

My Daddy was the strongest, the kindest

And so good.

But the pits were unforgiving

And the life you led was hard,

My Dad once strong, left broken

Your lungs and limbs left scarred.

And still you struggled onward,

Did your best for every one.

Wife, brothers, sons and grandkids

All loved by you in turn.

Towards the end you made new friends,

And life at last was fun.

Your smile for all was special

A little ray of sun.

But your struggles now are over

And you can finally rest.

You know we’ll always love you

My Dad, you were the best.
